good quality condition for such an old book.A very strong history of social, economic and political life in the British Isles from the earliest waves of immigrant invasions up to 1983. Numerous illustrations depict the lives of ordinary people, particularly the upheavals in traditional society since the Industrial Revolution began, and the gradual decline of Britain as a world power since WWI and WWII.Hauser and Briggs' history traces the development of English culture from prehistoric times to the present. They draw insightful connections between trends and events, and supplement the written history with a wealth of illustrations that, rather than merely illuminating the text, form an integral part of the understanding of the way all things English have emerged into the present.Although the book was described as new, it had a one inch tear in a very prominent position on the front right-hand corner of the dust jacket, which also had a series of creases along the top edge. In addition, the top of the front cover of the book had some heavy dents in it. While I do not doubt that this book has never been sold previously, its condition suggests that it had not been stored appropriately. It would have been helpful if this damage had been acknowledged in the description of the item. All school children should read this.a replacement copy for one lent and not returned many years ago. Well written and still relevant, a good insight into the makings of modern England and the social history of the EnglishLe livre était pratiquement gratuit mais cela s'explique: il manque des pages !I purchased this book as a replacement to a borrowed book. I was well aware of the competence of the author and had read the book. The book has now been replaced with the mailing to the original owner
